I think all thoughts derive from the combination of a small set of innate core priors -- in a way that is not entirely dissimilar to how all programs in a given language derive from the combination of a small set of built-in instructions.

Fully agree that thoughts are derived from core priors. However, I don't think it is easy to observe what those priors are. Sometimes, it can take years of contemplation and meditation to become aware of our core motivations.
-
More importantly, we learn these priors from scientific interrogation such as in the case of altruism with no obvious relationship between the benefactor & the beneficiary (such as mother and child).

For me, those priors exists and are our instincts, but humans can overcome them thanks to the intelligence, and even do it consciously: we can defeat our fears, decide not to use violence at all, or even stop eating as a protest.

not sure it's "simple" to observe what the innate primitives are, but there's quite a bit of relevant work in cogsci/dev psych. a few AI-ish folks have been productively engaging with that community/research, e.g. josh tenenbaum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB78vRUO6X8 …
