The problem with "reply" buttons and comment boxes: trolls reply at a much higher rate than average people. Even if only one in 20 of the readers of the content are trolls, their replies may account for half of the replies.

Newspapers should not have comment boxes (unless they are ready the employ full-time people to heavily curate the replies), and Twitter should allow disabling replies on tweets, as well as removing specific replies (only way to do this now is by blocking the poster)

WordPress and other alternatives give you that control, and many of us would like to read you elaborating more on some topics. Why not?

It would be interesting to see if newspaper comments could work on something like the stack reputation model. Seems like a newer outlet like Vox could implement easily and it might work well for more wonkish papers like WaPo too

Comments become micro-letters to the editor instead of free access to someone else's publication platform. Sounds right.

Or maybe good AIs to curate the comments?

Giving people the ability to delete specific replies on their tweets would destroy the core political utility of twitter - that we can all leave strongly, strongly dissenting opinions on the tweets of authoritarian politicians and they can't remove them.

This is nonsense. Freedom of speech exists for a reason. As a national of a repressive country, I see open comments of tweets and articles as one of the only ways to see what people around are truly thinking. Controlling and cleansing feedback is a slippery slope to censorship.

I agree. Freedom of speech is very important. But we should identify the troll as a lobby who controls more than 90% of of the speech.

Local newspaper comment boxes are the worst because your one local crank gets a free shot at spewing madness. Can't believe advertisers don't mind being right next to the troll box
