It's always a major red flag when a decision-maker claims to have "great intuition for judging people" or "a x-ray for character". Human intuition is fundamentally biased -- much like machine learning algorithms, but often worse.

Data based driven decisions can be used to augment human intuition for better decisions but I doubt if data alone can be better, but I agree with where you are coming from.
