Reading texts written by the ancients is always fascinating to me. It pains me to know that most of what they have written has not reached us. By most estimates, only 1% to 5% of classical texts survive today.

The dark ages didn't do us any favors with non biblical books being burnt in the west. Imagine a future in a 1000 yrs where everything electronic would be wiped clean or accessible only to an elite that wanted to rule. A lot easier to wipe electronic data than burn books?
In ancient times, only a few dozens of copies of a book existed at any given time (as they had to be copied by hand). Digital data is easy to erase, but it is equally easy to copy, which in my opinion means it has a better chance at surviving in the long term.

You are probably right. You would only need one safe haven to survive in order to have 80+% of global knowledge survive (though a much smaller percentage of global “data” would survive). One big cached searched engine for survival of humanity’s knowledge! Google! Baidu! Save us!

BTW, thank for your book which I have found really easy to follow. You have made the science part of it look simple (thanks for not going into the complex math involved in gradient descent!). It’s a bit of an art form to pick right net structure for the right problem.
