A pillar of Athenian democracy was sortition: selecting officials at random among a large pool of valid candidates. It can be very effective at preventing tribalism and corruption.

Am 100% for this! But can some of that pool of candidates have science or engineering degrees, too?
Ok, what about "Congress being 500 random citizen between 30 and 60 with any college degree, serving for 2 years"?

I think we might see a persistent class of lobbyists and technocrats grow up around this perpetually inexperienced legislature though, wielding power by virtue of having more continuity and context.

This already happens in a lot of smaller local government contexts, where electeds are much closer to being random people. Staff & other long-term participants in the processes of governance end up being major unelected influences.
