Competition does bring innovation. Focusing on users is just another way to "destroy" the competition. Unless an alternative can focus on users in another more appealing way.
Being user-centric in your decisions rather than competition-centric is actually a very different mindset, with different outcomes.

A good step in that direction would be to stop validating the popularity contests amongst autodiff platforms. We shouldn't care who has more momentum, GitHub stars, or citations.
