I think you'd see a lot of AI progress happen all of a sudden if you took away all the GPUs

I doubt it. There was plenty of time to come up with brilliant solutions before GPUs were a thing; didn't happen.
If you spent years working with a CPU, and I give you a GPU, you will come up with something new. If everything you've done in the past few years requires a GPU, and I take it away, you will come up with something new.

You were mentioning brute-forcing, so my point was that taking away brute-forcing tools leaves us... brutes. If you like the exploration/exploitation metaphor, we have a lot of exploiters and there's no historical evidence that they'd turn into explorers.

Isn't the GPU just accelerating linear algebra? In the end it seems pretty basic. Like if you didn't have it, you'd just keep reinventing it.
