Large companies have minds of their own. But they're not alien minds like Moloch in Metropolis. They're a direct reflection of the values of the people who built these systems and lead them. You see this a lot in the tech industry -- leadership matters enormously.

Why in your opinion ethic and law aren't aligned (I see that even with my job: sales representatives tell customers that they pay higher price than they actually pay and then sell to customers higher prices than they had. That's unethical but perfectly legal)
