Large companies have minds of their own. But they're not alien minds like Moloch in Metropolis. They're a direct reflection of the values of the people who built these systems and lead them. You see this a lot in the tech industry -- leadership matters enormously.

People will sometimes say "the problem is the business model", but that's not quite right. Almost every business model involves plenty of opportunities to profit from legal yet ethically dubious practices, because there's rarely good alignment between ethics and law.

Every company in every industry is faced with these decisions. What matters is the choices the leadership ends up making. The culture they create. To caricature, you can be a good cable company or an evil one. You can be a good social media company or an evil one. Etc...

Doesn't stock holder control lead to unethical practises like parking profits offshore ? I don't recall any of the big 4 paying due taxes.
