People will sometimes say "the problem is the business model", but that's not quite right. Almost every business model involves plenty of opportunities to profit from legal yet ethically dubious practices, because there's rarely good alignment between ethics and law.

Every company in every industry is faced with these decisions. What matters is the choices the leadership ends up making. The culture they create. To caricature, you can be a good cable company or an evil one. You can be a good social media company or an evil one. Etc...

We could call it ‘emergent behaviour’. Did you see ‘The corporation’? Must see. When analysed as a person a large corporation has the personality of a psychopath, regardless the values of the people that built them...
