Current procedural generation in games is a combination of randomness and hard-coded interestingness (rules and templates). After playing for a while, environments look all the same despite being unique, because you've learned to recognize the underlying hand-crafted algorithms

I think the trouble with that is that it inevitably comes with a lot of emergent uninterestingness for players to wade through. I prefer procedural generation to be a tool for the designers who can curate the best bits into a tight coherent experience for the players.

Basically, like all optimization procedures, it depends on how you formulate your objectives. It's very easy to formulate objectives that can be fulfilled by weird solutions that are not at all what you think.
This is where the #AI subfield of #computationalcreativity comes in. For 2 decades, we’ve been writing software to surprise us, educate us and change our minds. Emergence is OK, but #AI software can be much more proactive in bringing surprise, intrigue, value and novelty.
