It's funny how most tech people in SV tend to perfectly embody classic right-wing values, yet are classified (and self-identify) as leftists. I think that says a lot about US politics.

There's one thing missing from this picture though, the one thing that apparently defines being Republican in 2018

I think you may be mistaking an American cultural trait (rule-following) for something political.

Disagree that SV folks are on top of the social hierarchy, or that they like it. Only successful founders and VCs can make this claim - and they’re still a small minority of total population.
-
Why would founders and VCs of successful companies be on top of the social hierarchy but not their extremely well paid and respected employees? This may make sense if you completely separate the economic from the social (i.e. a relatively non-capitalist society)...

I have thought about this issue too, and I think there are a few factors that basically disqualify me from even considering voting republican.
-
1) It might be okay to respect certain power structures like money ( e.g. I think Jeff Bezos deserves his wealth ), but it's not okay to disrespect people who are less likely to have as strong a voice ( women, minorities, immigrants ).

"intense respect for the law and for rules in general". This doesn't put you anywhere other than away from the extremes of any political chart.

@TheEconomist made a strikingly insightful argument that deserves a read. It goes against the long-term self-interest of the SV crowd to ignore its conclusion. https://econ.st/2CRq9O6Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

This contradiction comes from the misunderstanding when people conflate "liberal" with "left". As you mentioned here, the liberals from the SV are not "leftist" as we understand it in continental Europe. Remember in Europe (Belgium at least), Liberal party = right
