A trend that's incredibly misleading and frankly braindead: comparing the number of neurons in animals (C. elegans, honeybee, marmoset...) with the number of "neurons" in an ANN (which is the sum of the dimensionalities of the intermediate spaces you use for affine projections)

It's a bit like comparing the number of atoms in a glass of mercury with the total number of cells in the grapes that went into making your glass of wine It makes no sense whatsoever

This may be the Frenchest analogy you ever made.

Depends how similarly they behave. Colloidal particles "look" nothing like atoms, but their collective behavior can be quite similar, and their total number is a relevant and analogous paramater for both. Cells are quite different most of the time though.

As ANNs are meant to mimic intelligence I think comparing the computational costs of ANNs to biological systems which are intelligent is meaningful. But of course, a biological neuron is not the same as a ANN's neuron... Still it helps to think about energy efficiency in ANNs

Biological neurons are very different, but also their connectivity and brain plasticity is much more flexible then our NN architectures. There are simple organisms that are far more clever then state of art reinforcement learning systems using many more neurons.

Even scientists who are extremely adept at understanding and manipulating the mathematical concepts behind both ANNs and biological networks of neurons immediately jump to empty explanations on the order of "Wow here are two ginormous but incommensurable numbers! Wow!"
