Baffled by the reactions to this -- apparently many believe that procedural generation and AI would mean taking away creator control or making games bland. That's no more true than "moving to CG will replace artists in the animated movie industry". AI is a tool for creators.https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1038032112798953472 …

In the future, game environments that are procedural ecosystems inhabited by AI agents will be the norm, not a selling point. Handcrafted game environments will seem quaint and retro

It will make it possible to create more interesting game environments in less time, since the artists can leave the repetitive tasks to AI and do the interesting parts themselves. And RL agents for balance testing and maybe creating interesting computer players.

Agree. The same thing is true in many architectural and engineering contexts - more tooling that uses procedural generation of common artifacts and automates many previous calculations/checks which required manual evaluation is freeing up creative folks who can focus on design.

Socrates thought the Stoics wrecked everything by writing down their arguments. In Middlemarch someone complains that steam trains have ruined polite society. Evelyn Waugh bemoaned he was the last generation of Oxford students who'd get drunk and recite poetry, radio killed it.

It's the kind of statement that technologists makes on behalf of artists. Artists don't make them themselves. Why, do you think?

The problem with AI and procedural generation is that it sometimes does not fit to the game. In some cases we need carefull consideration of impact of elements on whole game. So this task may be closer to AGI than we would think.

The generated elements have to fit to the handcrafted ones and the only way to check result is to play test it. The problem is that all has to logically fit together. Of course everything is depended on how much we will rely on generated elements to set mood\plot\feel\...

Artists have developed the ability to tell good art from bad art. When they comment on new code linting tools, you ignore them. Leave it to them to be impressed or unimpressed by new tools.

Dont understand why people are jumping on you. AI will only add, nothing is taken away. As an artist I am extremely excited for the freedom and discovery this will bring. Dwarf Fortress but on a grander scale and level of immersion
