My use case for an extremely large ML conference is that it gets everyone in the same location for a few days, so I can meet up with all the people I don't usually see (not serendipitously, but by scheduling time in advance). If it sells out in 15 min, that doesn't work anymore.

Somehow it makes me feel good, seeing that at least it was fair, and that many famous researchers did not get a ticket through "channels". But I sure hope that the hype will subside a little.
