Most AI problems have long tails -- like giraffes. Natural language question-answering, autonomous driving, fraud detection... To perform well on the long tail, we must go beyond pattern recognition (what deep learning does) and develop systems capable of abstraction & reasoning.

Perhaps category theory is at a realistic level of abstraction for describing complex systems and any more concrete resolution may be a futile endeavor?

Formalism and abstraction? What's the path to a Math that refers to words that don't have a meaning but context based meanings and echoes? Issues which are more complex in some languages such as Arabic and Farsi and more concrete in German for example.
