If you are ever in doubt that we need to keep doing more to make the ML community more welcoming and more diverse, you can always look at the ML subreddit, where, whenever the topic of diversity comes up, the must upvoted comments are always the most disgusting and toxic.
This place is rife with misogyny, racism, and antisemitism, in addition to general trolling and toxicity. No, this is not representative of the ML community at large -- most people in our community are good people. This is the toxic fringe. But that fringe is still part of it.
As long as these attitudes exist, all efforts to make our community more welcoming are important and necessary.
Place is full of wannabes and script kiddies, best ignored
I see it as a general problem with many online communities where anonymous users can post comments unmoderated. That doesn't necessarily absolve us from fighting against such tendencies though. So whenever and wherever possible, let's speak out and deter.
