As technologists, the seemingly innocuous decisions we make in our products end up influencing the way people behave, their relationships with others, the knowledge and viewpoints they get exposed to... Technology is never neutral. That's why awareness of ethics is so essential.https://twitter.com/jack/status/1029846451524960261 …

Appreciate the conversation today. This reflects a lot of our thinking. We’ve changed Twitter a lot over time, but one thing we haven’t touched is what the service implicitly incentivizes people to do. That’s the level we need to reconsider. https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1029836904169201672 …

In AI-driven products, the goals your algorithms are optimizing for are a critical element of the UX of your product. Over time, these objectives end up *defining* the product. It at all possible, these goals should be made configurable by the users they affect.

Algorithmic decisions end up programming... people. It is increasingly time to reverse that trend -- let technology be a tool in the hands of end users, let not users become tools to be manipulated by technology.

There are bad actors behind these tools doing the manipulating - they don’t (yet?) act on their own volition. How do we build tools that are resistant to that manipulation?

And even if we know how - then how do we start organizations that are incentivized to build the tools “correctly” in the first place?

“Program or be programmed”... a distopia to avoid, while still using it to motivate people to learn CS in secondary/high school.

Users already have capability to follow, block mute... the power is in the hands of the users. We need AI to be neutral.

There are cases when we have to 'program people', because when everyone acts based on self-interest everyone will arive at suboptimal result (bad Nash equilibrium). When giving or taking away freedom of users we have to make sure that their best decision lead to good outcomes.

Agree, but humans ARE algorithms. Always have been. ‘I think therefore I am’ is deeply flawed, as brains are bayesian bc of how information is processed for a decision (human action) to occur. BayesianDL & models in neuroscience are being overlooked. XAI via BayesianDL is 🔑
