Some fake activity detection problems are difficult, e.g. detecting click fraud for displays ads. Even then, the ad industry is doing really well on these issues (often using logistic regression). But Twitter bot detection is not difficult, esp. because accounts are permanent

Ofc Twitter could spot and prevent this if they were really motivated to... They probably don't see it as a huge threat to their revenue. It seems like recently they have started to tackle this but v late to the party!

Twitter doesn’t understand its value, doesn’t know its moat is all the important people in the real world who are regularly active on here. Useless spam bot filters are just one example of twitter not prioritising the UX of users who create all its value. Crazy!
