As individuals, let's stop asking: "what will I get?" - Start asking: "how can I help?" As a society, let's stop asking: "is it profitable?" - Start asking: "does it matter?"

Love this, it's something I've been thinking about this summer as I plan my open source work and teaching for the fall. In 2018/2019 I'd like more ways to contribute to what matters.

It is nice what you say but is not how humans operate in today's society design. Let's find solutions to redesign society for be able to think like that. I'm sure we can. We just have to build decentralised communication and autonomous organisation tools.

Okay, I take you at your word. How can I, as a beginner in machine learning, help you?

You can find many people or causes who need your help more than I do. In the context of open-source though, this would mean "contribute to the project (with PRs, docs, answering issues) instead of merely using it & requesting maintainers' time to solve your own issues" 🙂

The thing is - everyone understand that it doesn't work very well in today's neo-liberal economic model. We have this toxic mindset 'if you don't make money, you lose'. Even, and especially, governments, which normally would lead by example (see Flint water crisis for reference)

So first of all we need to acknowledge, somehow, that making something for greater good without profit is normal, even essential. The kind of thinking that was unfortunately lost generations ago. How would we do that?

Sorry to say, but not your best tweet "Oh, well, then stop" For years (long time, low intensity) I've been learning & thinking about that problem; I'm reaching the conclusion that it cannot be solved, but there's hope: I'm still far from an experthttps://twitter.com/trylks/status/976825204021321728?s=19 …
