As in, this is not a case of one ideology debating another on an equal footing. Knowledge developped through a century of consensus-building and evidence-collection among thousands of rational humans weighs more than evidence-free ideological arguments.

I think for many ppl ‘debate’ connotes a kind of open-ended public verbal argument, like parliament or the Oxford Union. Scientific results aren’t up for debate in that ordinary sense, they are up for scientific debate & criticism.
