Too many people in the field of AI are chasing the latest fashions. My advice: keep your eyes on the fundamentals, focus on the long-term challenges. The important questions are still the same today as they were 20 years ago.
And be skeptical of teachers who jump on the latest shiny thing because "all the cool kids are into it". They'll regret it next year when it goes out of fashion. This applies to software tools as well. First principles never go out of fashion.
