The creation, spread, and accumulation of knowledge is what makes our civilization move forward. But society has no appropriate mechanism to price and reward these advances commensurately to their benefits. As a result, we are under-investing in that which is most essential to us

This is true even in the short term, but it compounds in the long term. The value of novel knowledge should be integrated over... all of history going forward. Including 2nd order benefits.

If # of Instagram followers can become the new currency of choice then maybe there's hope something similarly crazy can emerge to solve this.

How do u imagine compensating such feats? Recognition has always been the main thing the contributors cared for, never compensation.

Is this true? Knowledge is important but what about art, culture, friendships, love, trust, pro-social group behaviours, fraternity, egality, liberty, and joy? These things are also important. Perhaps the problem is that we try to create a metric of unitary value at all.

Scientific progress is often achieved by outsiders of the society who are thinking differently. You can’t do this in a comfort zone. In the end, knowledge is created since you need to solve some problems. So you need to be in a situation where you encounter problems.

"Does not reward the advances commensurately"? Really? Have you even looked at Goog, FB, AAPL, NFLX, AMZN's market capitalization lately? Capitalism rewards the innovator plenty well (to the point they go rogue chasing said reward) --> http://thechinonomist.blogspot.com/2018/02/beware-of-shark.html?m=1 …
