The utilitarianist perspective on ethics is deeply questionable -- it presupposes that we know what goal to pursue (we don't) and that we can predict the impact of choices wrt our progress towards that goal -- not only first order impact, but 2nd order and 3rd order as well.

Any scalar objective function you can come up with for human society is always broken in obvious ways. But you don't need to know what the end goal is in order to act in a just way. Know what your values are, and stay true to them. Act based on principles, not predicted outcomes

Define "end goal", I would argue there can only be "local" end goals. We can never know what doesn't exist in the first place

Isn’t this the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning? Sorry for being the stupid guy interfering in the marketplace of geniuses.

No worries! I see no marketplace neither geniuses here 😕 AFAIK: Principle → action = deduction Action ← consequences = abduction You may want to read about modus ponens & tollens, forward & backward chaining @fchollet should remember αß pruning, etc. & avoid false dilemma

What about using inverse reinforcement learning to learn morality?

Healthy systems Mind, body, economy, society, environment,… System → area of expertise, & basic knowledge Nobody needs to be a doctor to understand that exercise is healthy, saturated fats are unhealthy,… Health is aligned: healthy systems promote health in other systems

Utilitarianism is ideal as long as we weigh morality consequentially, which we should if outcomes matter more that actions. But for overly complex moral problems, acting on principles is more feasible.

This supposes that any arbitrarily chosen set of principles is a good one. Clearly a bad idea, given that a set of principles can value murder and suffering.
