A enormously important but underappreciated thing: as a researcher, make sure your financial incentives are aligned with the public interest & with the progress of science. In particular, your funding & compensation should not depend on your ability to impress non-experts.

If you start a research lab where your funding depends on whether your research can impress the general public, or a rich donor, or the CEO of some tech company, then you will very soon find yourself running not a research lab, but a PR agency with a research arm attached.

And that's a bad place to be -- bad for science, and bad for the public that's being misled. Incentives matter more than you know -- make sure you have the right incentives early on.

I guess your recommendations are applicable only to independent publicly funded laboratories?

Public perceptions of companies directly affect market value. PR is a critical part of any budding business. That is not to say that this should be in lieu of good r&d but don’t make the false assumption that a company that has great PR is automatically a charlatan.

I'm not sure about the "incentives matter more than you know" part. But I agree with everything else, more attention should be paid to incentives, they are reward functions working at a societal level, shaping societies and individuals in them.https://twitter.com/trylks/status/1024046990651523075?s=19 …

Not just for science, for anything you plan to do, double check the incentives in it You won't like finding out later that you have been *trying* to move counter-current https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1024014592383508480?s=19 …

I deal with this from the other side of the equation. #Politics driving $$$ to this type of researcher in important, but niche, areas. Hate it when a good project struggles to gain access b/c resources have been over-allocated to feasible, but not go-to-market capable, projects.

Not saying good things cannot happen from feasibility work. RD&D is sort of our thing in the US, especially with public funds. Never know who might improve on the information later. Drowning out other avenues in the same area due to over-investment due to politics tho? Annoying.
