What's most striking about the idea *not* to provide education and healthcare to your people (like most nations do) isn't just that's it's cruel, it's that it's incredibly inefficient. People, especially young people, are the primary resource of a nation. Invest in them.

If you're a country that can afford it (like, say, the richest country in the world), it should be a no-brainer, even if you have no moral compass. If you want to run the nation like a business, invest in your (lifelong) employees.

That's true if we want to run a sustainable business. It's much easier to focus short-term returns to satisfy shareholder- and analyst-expectations. The largest shareholders are private corporations and special interests.. I think it isn't too surprising that it is how it is.
