What's most striking about the idea *not* to provide education and healthcare to your people (like most nations do) isn't just that's it's cruel, it's that it's incredibly inefficient. People, especially young people, are the primary resource of a nation. Invest in them.

If you're a country that can afford it (like, say, the richest country in the world), it should be a no-brainer, even if you have no moral compass. If you want to run the nation like a business, invest in your (lifelong) employees.

At the heart of the modern conservative movement is the idea that some nebulous “other” is immoral and needs to suffer. They’re fine with these things going to themselves, but they’ll also go out of their way to make life harder for some group they don’t like.

It often means deliberately doing the different thing to prove allegiance to our tribe. When the rest of the world is doing something dumb, this is great. When the rest of the world is doing something great, this is dumb.
