The idea that a scientific field should have one large conference where everyone goes and presents their results, and sees the same keynotes, is really a recipe for groupthink.

I agree. I love all the serendipitous meetings at big conferences, and less and less time to go to talks. But for scientific content, I often prefer smaller, more focused conferences.

It's also very refreshing when you see a whole little community moving in a different direction than the mainstream. I think there's too much agreement on what's worth achieving in the mainstream AI community. And of course also about what methods matter.
