This is possibly the most important thing to learn from human history: progress does not move in one direction. Great civilizations take a while to get started, then follow a few centuries of fast technological development, then enter a plateau, then fall.https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1014474194136989696 …

Civilization & technology don't move forward monotonically, unlike what many people believe these days -- it took 1.5 millennia for the Western world to return to this level of sophistication in this domain

We've been in the fast development phase for 600 years. If we never exit it, that would be a first in human history. Arguably, our civilization has changed the rules of the game quite a bit, so it may not follow the historical pattern. But it might -- e.g. ecological collapse

Well that's definitely a reason for all of us to keep building and moving forward with force (ethically). Delay the decay.

Also I think the "we've changed the rules enough where even if things did go terribly wrong it wouldn't be the end" situation is the most likely. However, we should make it a priority to have populations of at least 100,000 in space sooner rather than later just in case.

Please, some one tell M. Chollet that our Western Civilization is already falling...since 1914...in spite of the technological progress. And sometimes (as in the case of loss of privacy and so many other liberties) thanks to it.

The plan is a final war as most, or enough, people believe in the final battle of religion and the few in the command control over this happening see it as a way to mass depopulate so as to hold on to their bloodline position, Where if they can't have it their way, nobody does.

For those who doubt this, consider the resources spent on military and realize it is not justified by any real threat, but only fabrication threat the Military Industrial Complex generates (i.e. Iraq). Trump is hunkering down for it and in so doing contributing to it happening.

There's some pretty powerful evidence to suggest that many civilisation downfalls are due to some kind of ecological crisis. Arguably, global cooling in the late 2nd century/early 3rd century AD caused a cascade effect that crippled Rome, destroyed Han China and the Kushans.

Our changes to the rules, compared to civilizations of the past, is so fundmental and so profound that there is really no reason why it shouldn't be different this time. That is the power of science and seeking good explanations through a culture of criticism.

NOT "it might" BUT "it IS (ecological collapse)" unless you and I have different definitions of it.
