Don't dismiss something just because it isn't immediately obvious how it can benefit you. A lot of the most important advances that ended up empowering everyone and leveling up the playing field started out as toys for the rich & geeky. See the larger vision
And please, stop dismissing free online education as "only for the privileged" because it requires internet access & free time. Something that has the potential to transform the lives of 50% of ppl on the planet (including many ppl less privileged than you) is nothing to scoff at
Especially if you consider that the reach is higher for young people, and fast-growing. And especially if you consider second order effects -- what progress will online-educated people bring to their communities?

Free online education is the best thing that's happened to me. Learned to code and have a life changing career with the help of free online courses.
Free online education is one of greatest inventions in this century. 90% of my programming skills +machine/deep learning are due to free online classes. Skills I couldn't afford to learn otherwise. One needs only willingness + internet, which is cheaper in many other countries
I've approved +100 free courses on Coursera last year... Is GREAT to improve self education online. If I should have to pay just for the certificates I would need more than 7 working months in my country.
Exactly. I am a student and MOOCs platforms like edx,mitocw and Google services like Youtube, Chrome etc. are really important to me. I see people like Tim Cook saying "if it's free, then you're the product", those people don't get the value of free services like Google, Youtube.
My Chrome bookmarks are a hyper organized collection of resources with folders for stuff like electronics,ML, python etc. Same goes for Youtube, very few people know about Youtube's troves of education resources. Also, due to Google's algorithmic news feed, i have discovered ..
