Don't dismiss something just because it isn't immediately obvious how it can benefit you. A lot of the most important advances that ended up empowering everyone and leveling up the playing field started out as toys for the rich & geeky. See the larger vision

And please, stop dismissing free online education as "only for the privileged" because it requires internet access & free time. Something that has the potential to transform the lives of 50% of ppl on the planet (including many ppl less privileged than you) is nothing to scoff at

Especially if you consider that the reach is higher for young people, and fast-growing. And especially if you consider second order effects -- what progress will online-educated people bring to their communities?

Happens a lot with books. Usually we look at the cover and author and be like nah, not interested. Happens a lot with important research papers that later on are seen as breakthroughs.

Wanted to learn "C" and taught myself what I could then went to Dekalb Tech who wanted me to take several years of courses before "C". Got them to let me take "C" without this pre-requisite. Made deans list. But ind. was in a recession....

So getting a job in programming wasn't possible and working in a non-programming field tired me after 40+ hours a week. By the time I was able to get my head back into "C" it was monday morning and off to work. Then there are software updates and programming tools obsolescence.

The larger vision. When there is one. Most of the so-called innovations are devoid of vision. But we pay for them anyway.
