This is especially striking in deep learning, a field where almost everyone has joined in the past ~3 years and has little experience (especially compared to the overall complexity), and where there are few established facts. Lots of strong opinions, all from talking points.

I was young, naive, and paired with a marketeer as part of a wedding party. While chatting I said, "It must be hard to figure out what people want." She replied, "It's irrelevant, we tell them what they want." I was astounded. Can we really want what we want?

"Think Therefore I Am" scenario has always interested me. It does come down to your own "faith" in the existence of reality. I HAVE to trust my senses my own consciousness reacting to this reality in order to trust the "facts" that make up my "beliefs" ... or else I go mental.

Best example is how people are afraid of lifts - no danger at all yet people would rather bungee jump than being locked in a lift!

Another way of saying, “Say it enough and it becomes the truth.” So what can we as a community to help assure that Deep Learning doesn’t reinforce the reality-twisting-repetition of pervasive marketing?
