Products render services. Even entertainment products. Engagement and time spent are often adverse to the purpose of a product even on the lower end of the scale, and trying to maximize those is destructive for both products and users 100% of the time

It seems like a worthwhile discussion on what are alternative optimization patterns? Engagement is clearly linked to marketing. What if users decided? Some may choose value systems (ethical, religious or otherwise). Some might choose emotional content (like engagement).

It’s not a terrible idea for, say, video games. Definitely agree Google lead by example by saying the least time people spent looking for something, the better.
