The web is an app development platform focused on GUIs and easy sharing of apps with the whole world. And that's genius. Too bad that historically it started as a document publishing platform, which means the stack is inappropriate for its purpose in many ways

For mobile to overtake it, you'd need to make app creation & app publishing on all appstores as fast easy as putting up a web page (plus app discovery as good as web search) Push a button, and everyone can find your app. It will happen eventually

Isn't that partially the promise of the progressive web app? All the discoverability / shipability of the web, but with the features of their native cousins.

My experience with PWAs so far has been that they are generally much faster / more reliable / less bloated than their native counterparts. Though, I'm still waiting for a shift towards languages like rust compiled to wasm..

Phone interfaces must dramatically change to enable that. Rn keeping tabs on hundreds of web pages – no problem. Hundreds of apps... A bit more difficult.

We're actually pretty close to that if you use React Native and CodePush. Once you get your app past the Apple garbage hole, you can push JS bundle changes instantly over the wire, thus making it approximately as easy as pushing to prod on web.
