We haven't yet solved even 10% of the problems we could solve with existing AI/ML techniques. Even if new research were to deliver nothing from now on, there still wouldn't be another AI winter. AI/ML will keep on delivering for years to come.
Naturally, there will be an "AGI winter" of sorts -- interest in hyped-up "general human-level AI" projects will fade when it becomes clear that these aren't going anywhere and that the promises were empty. It is the nature of hype bubble to eventually pop.
Fortunately, this should improve the productivity and focus of our community, rather than harm it. Our biggest successes are still ahead

Brainstorming here: Automatic plant + animal species identification in your pocket. Automatic routing of proposed legislation to those it pertains to by parsing its text. Improved weather forecasting. Crop monitoring (and then going a further to improve crop quality + yields).
Sincere apologies if this sounds silly or sarcastic, it is not my intention...but is there any list or repository of these problems? I want to try my hands on some of them.

It's not even a case of an area being too exotic, it's that there are so many areas where it is applicable that there aren't enough competent people to try them all yet.
