I see motivation, not access to knowledge, as the bottleneck in education today. And the keys to solve the problem of motivation are open-endedness and self-direction.

By open-endedness do you mean switching to more project based learning and flexibility in direction and scope like the Phd model?

It doesn't necessarily have to be project-based or very flexible, but it should put the learner in charge (even if in an illusory way).
