Also, I don't like the view that a lack of motivation in the context of education is a personal failing. That's like saying that not having fun while playing a video game is your fault, rather than the fault of the game designers. Motivation should be part of curriculum design.

Good points but disagree on detail. Environment should be structured to promote development & only apparently open-ended. Direction should come from social environment (Vygotsky) rather than learner (Piaget).

Yes, agreed. A lot of new and old teaching methodologies are starting to gain popularity based on the idea of self-directed motivation. Waldorf is a good example. There are downsides too but seems to me that most people would benefit from a less rigid and more wiggly environment.

I agree on the first part, but not the second. Continuing the video game analogy, some people enjoy linear games and visual novels while others enjoy open world games. Motivation works differently for everyone and some are not motivated by open ended environments.

Exactly. This balance is quite difficult to achieve. Maybe having both options (open-world and linear) could be feasible on some scenarios?

Couldn’t agree more. What are your thoughts on collaboration in such an environment? Is there a teacher? Several? Can everybody be both student and teacher at the same time?
