Also, I don't like the view that a lack of motivation in the context of education is a personal failing. That's like saying that not having fun while playing a video game is your fault, rather than the fault of the game designers. Motivation should be part of curriculum design.
And an effective way to induce motivation is to let learners be self-directed, in a somewhat open-ended environment. Moving along a pre-determined path with no freedom to make your own decisions, or no quick feedback on your decisions, is demotivating.
I think those are different. In life there are times when you need to do boring stuff. I value the lessons I learned in school around reinforcing the skills around getting stuff done even if I didn’t like doing it.
Agree. Education should train kids to be able to motivate themselves to do what is boring but worthwhile.
Fully agree, at least not in early years before one starts to see the bigger picture of life and can make one’s own choices. This has so many implications on what we (should) regard as fair in society.
I understand your point of view but what will happen to those students when they face real life circumstances that are not motivational-designed? Maybe develop self-motivation should be part of the personal maturity of the student? A curricular motivation plan is life-preparing?
