Most things are getting better. The state of our environment is not one of them. And the US is kind of an outlier on most fronts, as usual.
You also have to see through first order effects and look at the derivatives. A lot of the current bad news is the legacy of terrible choices made in the past. But we do appear to be growing wiser as a species. Although this will take time to become fully apparent.
