On new facts, reliability is determined by looking at user votes weighted by their trustworthiness on the topic (votes from unreliable users get dropped). Grow from there. The system wouldn't drift much, because truth is self-consistent -- BS is not.

Yeah, let's give megacorps power to assign *secret* trust scores to users, what could go wrong?

I suspect the topic mechanism will cluster towards multiple senses of trustworthiness that are more akin to "similar bias" than "verifiable". I.e. won't the model will evolve at least two topics for Obamacare, one pro and one anti?

This kind of proposal is part of a 'new bit' of philosophy called social epistemology: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/epistemology-social/ … and short answer, as in the thread commentary "it probably isn't just as simple as that"

While I agree in principle, practice not so much. “Facts” become socially constructed. So that means opinion plays a part. Just ask the witches of Salem.

What could go wrong? We might get SEO instead of science.

Why secret scores - why not make them public? Wouldn't public scores encourage people to try harder to post facts?

@abestanway google briefly thought about “TruthRank” (as the media called it) and there was tons of pushback. From flat earthers, religious types, and hand-wringers who thought this was entirely inappropriate. It seems quaint now.https://www.salon.com/2015/03/06/anti_science_advocates_are_freaking_out_about_new_google_truth_rankings/ … -
Since
@fchollet works there - I would love to get a glimpse into how Google people think about this attempt and pushback now, in light of where we are. :) - Show replies
