This is hilarious. A Norwegian TV programme pitted some professional stock-pickers against an astrologist, some beauty bloggers and - i kid you not - cows shitting in a field. (short thread).

A couple of weeks ago I asked on Twitter what people felt they, individually (not others!), should do about climate change. There were many thoughtful replies:

lots of tweets about how we need to "change the system" and "fix our broken electoral process" and "end capitalism" in response to Labour getting creamed, but it seems to me that to do all those things you need to win an election first

Tories winning may be the only thing that can convince US Democrats: (1) Trump reelection is very possible if not likely (2) Twitter is not an accurate representation of voter opinion (3) Mainstream media are still consistently unable to grasp the political current

Any professor that forces their student to use FORTRAN or IDL is damaging that student's career because they are too inept to learn a language that is useful outside of tiny academic niches.

IMO, what's most interesting here is that assumption that being at any point in the pipeline for a "selective college" translates to "more educated." What he's actually describing is a particular milieu tiled with experiences that run largely orthogonal to intelligence/ability

Rent control is one of the best possible examples of a counter-intuitive policy outcome: it’s easy to imagine it causes lower prices, but in fact it almost always causes higher prices.

People drop £0.05 on the floor and don't care if they can't pick it up. You literally can't buy anything with £0.05 in a supermarket in 2019. Yet it's reduced plastic bag consumption by 90%.

I’m w how can we trust these companies to be the arbiters of what speech is acceptable or unacceptable? Maybe if we all could elect limited term CEO’s, but that will never happen. (Btw Sasha is the funniest man on earth and one of the smartest, just wrong here.)

Thread: there was a pretty impressive backlash against today's long read in the guardian about the idea that by studying large, long term trends in human history one may identify patterns in human societies. Patterns that may hold for the future. 1/

Did you know that ~500,000 people were lifted out of extreme poverty last week? If not, don't worry; the same thing will happen next week.

This has been happening for decades, largely ignored. University rankings are boosted by rejecting hopeful teenagers rather than graduating brilliant creators and thinkers — the latter provides the real value, but the former is easy to measure. It's emergent sociopathy.
