    This is chick number 100 to be banded on Tiritiri Matangi this season, he’s still rocking the Afro!

    We’ve now banded 44 chicks on and the first of these have fledged. It’s late but it’s happening!

    Nearly 50 chicks have now hatched on There’s not much food about this season so the parents are working extra hard to feed these hungry mouths & we’re providing much more sugar water than is usual for this time of year.

    chicks stay in the nest for 30+ days, this is a long time for a bird of their size. It means they are particularly vulnerable to introduced mammalian predators and this contributed to their disappearance from mainland NZ by 1890!

    Filled me with hope to see so many passionate young people at the in yesterday. Organised by 13 - 18 year olds and had an amazing turnout of approx 80,000!
