As a man on the spectrum I will not mince words: You do not love your daughter if you view her personality, and all that she is, as a "brain injury."https://twitter.com/janesmith659/status/977320793603563520 …

This is my 5 year old son, Jackson, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at 15 months old. He had his fifth brain/skull surgery 10 days ago (3 of the 5 have been since Feb 2017). He’s has to work *so hard* to do/learn just the basics. He’s a JOY. Bravest kid I know.pic.twitter.com/uCN9O4X3Fz

It should be said he’s so extraordinarily musically gifted, it’s inexplicable to me having been classically trained my whole life. He matches pitch with perfect precision, can memorize a melody after first listen, can riff instrument sounds on the fly. All before he was verbal.

As someone on the spectrum with kids on the spectrum, I feel it’s important to recognize that kids on the far end of the spectrum do have damage to how their brain functions. It isn’t like high-functioning autism.

Agree - future parents need to be aware they could have children with physical or mental or emotional difficulties who need special help that will change their lives forever.

Autism is not a brain injury or ailment. It is a processing difference. One that makes it difficult to operate and learn in a society geared toward a common denominator. Our inability and unwillingness to accept and accommodate these differences is what gives them 'disability'.
