"What are the connections between physical and mental suffering and intellectual effort?...Let’s never forget that Beethoven was deaf, Nietzsche had terrible migraines, and Socrates was ugly. It’s fascinating to find out what another person has had to overcome." ~ G. Steiner

Steiner's toughness surprised people. What it took to survive as an exile's exile. What it took to live with a physical deformity. What it took to choose life, beauty, and art in the aftermath of tragedy and senseless catastrophe.

I woke at 4 a.m. to discover that I had been directed dreaming about George Steiner for quite some time last night. I was dreaming of a young Steiner and I was dreaming of him as famished and scrappy, a survivor. All toughness, doggedness, determination, an exile's exile.

Steiner's conviction: "that serious literary and philosophic criticism comes from a 'debt of love,' that we write about books or about music or about art because 'some primary instinct of communion' would have us share with and communicate to others an overwhelming enrichment."

A thinker after Aushwitz who reckoned and wrestled with catastrophe his entire life, Steiner, ought to be accounted as one of the hopeful.

Sometimes I do actually have a superb owl weekend. On Saturday, I saw a couple of owls in Golden Gate Park, after a thick blanket of fog descended. And yes, they were as lazy, haughty, and superb as can be.
