“It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, to want to pile together the tragedies of this year and resign ourselves to apathy. But there is a silver lining to this year: we’ve learned more about the world than we ever cared to.”

"But unwittingly, we also used “it’s 2020” as an easy excuse to justify our complacency: it was a bad year and we couldn’t stop any bad thing from happening. We didn’t always take the time to question whether that was true." -- thank you

I wrote this in November. If I could edit it now, I'd also talk about the struggle to care for loved ones over long distances. I would expand the list of stories we weren't able to care more about because of the overwhelmingness of 2020 to include the Rohingya & Uyghur refugees

"The stories of 2020 that have marked me most deeply are the ones that we could have more easily done something about." In my first , I quickly reflect on the dread of this year, all the ways I tried to dismiss it, and all my hopes for 2021

"The most polluted part of his day happens at home, as he sinks into his dreams." This is incredible reporting on how inequalities drastically change the experience of climate change, and a stark reminder that "not everyone breathes the same air."

I didn't expect this year in review by to give me goosebumps but it did. It also reminded me of so many things I'd forgotten. (The Prime Minister went to Africa this year!?!) This one 👇🏾 is a perfect mood board. (I'm bottom left)

I'm angry about this. Angry that this became my favorite podcast. Angry because I looked to it as how terrorism should've been covered (more humanely and with nuance). Angry that this spurred Islamophobia, for no reason. NYT needs to apologize properly:

Nine months into the pandemic, I was exhaling: my family, scattered across the world, was safe. Yesterday, my eldest uncle died in Egypt. Over 3 days, he contracted Covid-19, was put on ventilator & died alone. Check in on your relatives. Stay vigilant. This is far from over 💕

Someone please ask me to write a reported essay how it took a pandemic for Canada to realize how valuable the technical expertise of immigrants and refugees was ... and yet didn't do anything to validate their foreign education and work experiences.

Versus New Zealand, Taiwan has experienced less than 1/2 the COVID-19 cases, and less than 1/2 the deaths. Taiwan also gets less than 1/2 the news coverage, while having 5x the NZ population and 14x the pop density. Taiwan is also woman-led: President Tsai Ing-Wen, PhD. (1)

There's a tiny bit of exclusive news in this explainer on the 2 rapid tests being used in Canada. An Alberta validation test—a study to make sure a medical test works for the target patients— found both to be largely accurate with a notable caveat:

There's so much about doctors are still trying to understand, including the effectiveness of rapid tests. To work well, doctors say these tests have to be used at the right place on the right patients by the right people. My latest :

Pepper-sprayed, covered with a spit hood, put face-down on the floor. Ontario has claimed no unauthorized force was used on Soleiman Faqiri. Now, new filings show what happened violated its own policies. A "triple threat" for asphyxia, one sergeant says.
