so obviously a lot happens in these chapters. pretty much the maximum amount that could happen, because god creates the universe (and this goes until end of cain + abel story).

first up always thought it was super interesting that the first thing god really does in separate light from darkness. not to pidgeonhole it but this is just super interesting as one of the main plagues of our age is people refusing to make distinctions between things

in classical drawing and painting, this is also the first thing you do: separate the areas that are in light from the areas in shadow. almost like its impossible to do anything without first establishing some dichotomy, making some clear distinction between two poles.

i have also always though it was super interesting that we get the seven days of creation story + then the adam and eve story, which are incongruous and dont fit directly together. TBH i am not sure what the differing "official" christian explanations for this are, will check out

in genesis 2:15 god puts adam in the garden to till + to keep it. he isnt put there for his own pleasure necessarily, hes there for a purpose one of the most interesting aspects of religion, to me, is seeing what mans relationship to god is so maybe there is a hint at that here

some super interesting commentary on this verse: what was adam was supposed to do there? its also somewhat telling that the first thing he has to do is "work", lol. humans are apparently made to do things and not be idle.pic.twitter.com/dw4o24C3WJ

when adam is hiding naked, god asks him "where are you?" (he also asks cain "where is abel?"). god knows the answers to these questions so him asking must have some other purpose. interestingly some commentary frames this as a spiritual question which I hadnt considered.pic.twitter.com/8khxX65SeA

im also making notes on cool images or scenes in the bible and thought the scene of god "marking" cain is pretty awesome. some say its a literal mark (that one can see), others say its more of a spiritual impartment. would be a great scene to illustrate either way.pic.twitter.com/cmUsW2UM9Z

finally ive also always felt there was something symbolic + significant in the fact that cain is a tiller of the ground, but abel raises sheep. god likes abels offering but doesnt like cains. maybe this is because a precious animal is more of a sacrifice than a plant?pic.twitter.com/XfxsLBBKrD

anyway that closes chapter 4. obviously wont be mentioning everything just things that stood out to me. if anyone has anything they really like or find interesting in these chapters, or if you have some special insight, im definitely interested.

When you get to the genealogies of Cain and Seth, pay attention to the meanings of the names and the similarities/differences between the two genealogies. It's quite interesting. Also, I really enjoyed this thread. I'm glad you're doing this.
