So more fresh fruits and veggies, ok. And for those folks who lack a fridge or the power gonna get shut off? You know how fast those things rot w/out a way to keep them? So you’re having to go to the grocery store multiple times a week, hope you have adequate transportation. 1/

Then there’s the cost. Say I only get $100 a month but the cost of fresh produce, including the cost to keep it & make it, is more than other foodstuffs. How long do you think the $100 is going to go for a fam of 4? 2/
-
So you have to make that last the whole month & feed your fam regardless of ways to store & cook it. How many spaghetti dinners can you make (I can make a big pot for less than $2 that’ll feed 3 adults & 1 child) vs a veggie frittata or veggie casserole? 3/
-
Being on any kind of assistance is like playing 12th dimensional chess with frequent “appointments” you have to make so they go over your docs w/fine tooth comb to make sure you actually “deserve” the help which is so little, you have to make hard choices on what you get. 4/
-
Pasta & can sauce, cheese, rice & beans, canned soups, canned veggies - ALL last a hell of a lot longer than fresh fruits and veggies. And toward the end of the month, your child’s belly isn’t going to understand, “well, sorry, we ate all the fresh & now there’s no $ left.” 5/
-
And rich people clutching their pearls at the “junk” the poors eat doesn’t help anyone. Unless you want to increase benefits so fresh is actually an option (along w/solving food deserts, homelessness, utility payments, transportation, etc), keep your mind on your own pantry. 6/
-
Cause your “concern” isn’t going to help and restricting choices from what WE know can last to what’s going to rot before you can feed anyone with it, is just going to result in more people going hungry. 7/7

Because when I look at Moby, I immediately think "there's a guy who clearly knows a lot about nutrition'.

I see that as a well-intentioned idea that by no means is intended to make life harder for the poor. I’d say the idea behind this is the restrict corporations’ ability to market processed garbage food to the poor.
-
I replied: The problem with this is, there’s no consensus on what’s “healthy.” Who gets to decide? Maybe a less restrictive version of this idea that restricts foods widely known to be damaging to your health, such as candy, sodas, processed carbs, margarine...
-
A better idea, IMO, is nutrition education, starting early on. I agree that people can make these decisions for themselves if equipped with the proper knowledge. The entire country needs to better prioritize nutrition education.

Also, VERY mis-leading headline.
