    Tries, fails to get commission in Army at start of war. Barely gets low-level appointment just as he’s about to give up and go back to being a clerk. Four years later, he’s the most revered soldier in America and on his way to presidency (two terms). Astonishing. Only in America?

    Slogging through Ron Chernow’s giant “Grant” and am struck by what a miracle his ascension to greatness was. Left Army under a cloud (drinking), failed farmer, failed businessman, family practically starved. Working as a clerk in brother’s store when Civil War breaks out. More...
