One reason classical music is more cerebral than modern music: back before recordings, to be part of the chain of transmission and creation of music, you had to read and write sheet music.

More like, musicians who did not write music can no longer be heard today + even those that did write something are usually not played so there's a double layer (at least) of selection bias.

That's what I called "the chain of transmission and creation". There can have been many potential musical geniuses out there that were never recorded in any way, or played by anyone but themselves, maybe close friends or relatives.
