Had a whole tweetstorm in my mind about how anti-nationalism is a form of self-hatred. But then I spent hours working outside in the sun & now I'm too tired to write. So instead I'll just be grateful for humanity's progress towards material abundance and knowledge work.

I'm anti-nationalist and I don't hate myself, thank you very much.

Neither do I. I don't get this claim. I also don't see why I should be loyal to an abstraction. I'm loyal to friends, to family, to important ideals. To a particular plot of ground? To a particular government no matter what its actions? Why should that be something I want?

Nationalism was the disease that killed off much of my family in the 20th century. I don't see why I should take "Blut und Boden" as an ideal when that idea nearly murdered my dad. Loyalty to principles, sure. But a country is something that can turn on you in a second.

Perhaps I should rephrase that. The place where you live is a geographic region, it isn't a sentient creature. It doesn't care about you. The people in it deserve your support if they're doing good things, and if they cease to or try to kill you, they cease to deserve it.

To the degree that you are stuck in a demarcated geographic region where fates are intertwined, and many important services & decisions happen at the national level, why not accept that fact? Yeah the governance mechanism sucks. But the entity is real.

I accept the government has power over me, but I don't see the benefit of being enthusiastic about it, or why I should find a person born in Mexico with an education and interests similar to mine less a member of my group than a person with no shared interests living in Idaho.

Before I may associate with that person in Mexico, though, I want to know: do they use emacs or vi?
